Iker sails for the Real Club Marítimo del Abra- Real Sporting Club. He now trains with his team -I'M RACING- in the Port Olimpic Calanova (Mallorca). You will be able to see him there sailing Nacra17, Moth, M32 or GC32. |

IKER MARTINEZ
Iker Martinez (San Sebastian, 1977) basque sailor, married with 3 childre. Lives between Santander and Palma. He started sailing at the age of 8 with his grandparents. He sailed Optimist and Vaurien before jumping into the 49er class at the age of 18. He is the most awarded olympic sailor which is still competing (Gold Athens 2004, Silver Beijing 2008). He participated with Xabi in London 2012 in the 49er class and a knee injury has kept him from winning the trials in the mixed multihull Class for Rio 2016. He has won 3 World Championships, 4 European Championships (the last one in Nacra17 2014), has won many World Cup Events. He was awarded with the Rolex Sailor of the Year in 2011. This past olympic cycle he has been sailing Nacra17, the new mixed class which will presumingly be flying on foils for tokyo 2020. He might give it another go. Besides his olympic carreer, he has been developing as an ocean sailor, having sailed around the globe 5times. in several projects such as sailor in Movistar (Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006), co-skipper in Telefonica Blue (VOR 2008-2009), skipper in Telefonica (VOR 2011-2012) and skipper in TEAM MAPFRE (VOR 2014-2015). With Xabi Fernandez he was 2nd in the double handed non-stope Barcelona World Race 2010, and they were also part of the Luna Rossa 2012 Challenger to the America's Cup. He is now focused in sailing catamarans, both M32 and GC32. Last year he was 5th in the WMRT just after his knee injury. He loves surfing, windsurfing, cycling, and any extreme sports.
